Full course description

Instructors: Dasan Ahanu and Kane Smego

In this course, a fusion of theory and practice, we’ll examine the history of hip hop as a tool for documenting culture by identifying various frameworks, motifs, and techniques of emceeing, lyricism, and storytelling in verse. Students will engage in analysis and discussion, complete various creative activities, and compose original verses and songs, culminating in a joint EP. The course will also provide basic instruction in building live and recorded performance skills as well as cover the basics of sound recording using DAWs (digital audio workstations). (12 hours / All Levels)

Equipment: Participants should have access to a laptop with a DAW (e.g., Protools, Logic, GarageBand, Audacity) and a recording interface.

This class will meet on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 pm ET.
